SEASON 6 SPOILERS AHEAD. The latest round of casting calls for Season 6 began today. There are several roles for thuggish outlaws terrorizing the countryside and using religious faith to justify their actions. A topical comment on religious fanaticism, not something instantly recognisable from the books so far but perhaps the Sparrows uprising and the Poor Fellows have taken a dark turn? Faced with the possibility of them spiralling out of control will the Iron Throne have to suppress them again, as happened during the days of Maegor the Cruel? A lord of a northern castle stronghold is required, “ruthless, educated, quick-witted and frightening,” could this be Lord Wylis Manderley? Another “lord of a noble northern house” is sought, the actor must be a “massive bear of a man” with a beard and violent temper, over 1.95m tall if possible, able to tower over the other cast members. This sounds like the Greatjon is being recast, which would be disappointing as Clive Mantle was perfect in the role.

Most exciting is a casting call that asks specifically for the best swordsman in Europe to play “Legendary Fighter,” a “paragon of knighthood” he carries a hugely famous sword on his back and is a fighting legend. Who is the legendary fighter? All we know is the actor can be any height and in the 30-45 age range. And the famous sword? Could a new Sword of the Morning arise? There are also calls for a young maester, timid and ineffectual, without the courage to stand up to other members of the order, presumably for Sam’s storyline at the Citadel in Oldtown. Two characters called Qhogo and Akrat sound like they may be Dothraki in Khal Jhaqo’s khalasar.

Casting calls released last month (May) had the names removed to prevent spoilers, and the names given out with today’s calls (Flynn, Japeth, Lachlan, Hunter , Qhogo and Akrat) may be pseudonyms. However, audition requests for a pirate, age 40s-50s are thought to be Euron Greyjoy, the Crow’s Eye. I always pictured Euron as Ian “Lovejoy” McShane when I was reading A Feast For Crows, would love to see him play Euron complete with his breaking the fourth wall pieces to camera he used to do in Lovejoy (which he also did at the end of the Death Race 2000 remake, much to my amusement). The Tarly family look set to appear, Sam’s soldier father Randyll, brother Dickon, sister Talla and mother Melessa. A gruff ex-soldier priest may be a conflation of Septon Meribald and the Elder Brother of Quiet Isle created for the TV series. The leading actress from a travelling theatre troupe may allude to Arya’s preview chapter from The Winds of Winter. Intriguingly, several child roles have been interpreted by some commentators as a flashback scene to Ned’s childhood, possibly seen by Bran through the weirwood. However, we think they may be for the story of Rickon, in hiding with the Umbers at Last Hearth, where Bran asked Osha to take him in season 3 episode 9 ‘The Rains of Castamere’.
